About the department
DOT handles the infrastructure side of emergencies: closing roads around a scene, clearing hazards, recovering disabled vehicles, and posting advisories that dispatch and every field unit can see.
It is a quieter department than the emergency services, but a highly visible one — a well-run DOT makes major scenes feel real, and its advisories drive the roadway picture in the CAD for everyone else.
What you will do
- Establishing and logging road closures and detours
- Clearing roadway hazards and debris
- Vehicle recovery and heavy towing operations
- Posting active roadway advisories visible to all CAD panels
- Traffic control at major incident scenes
What is expected of you
- Never step into a live lane that is not closed or controlled
- Log every closure, hazard, and recovery — and clear it when done
- Report to the incident commander before entering a scene
- Only operate equipment you are certified on
Divisions
Specialist assignments held alongside your rank — a Sergeant in a division is still a Sergeant. Divisions open applications periodically and usually require a minimum rank and a clean record.
Certifications
Qualifications that authorize specific duties. You earn these through training, and they gate what you are permitted to do on scene.
